NEW DELHI: The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today welcomed the statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein which questioned the unfair and hasty trial for convicting Maldives’s ex-President Mohammed Nasheed to 13 years imprisonment under trumped up terrorism charges and called for respect for standards of fair trial including “adequate time and the possibility to prepare and present his defence”. “The statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights makes it clear that sentencing of Nasheed is unlawful and that Nasheed be released immediately.
