Protection of IDPs in Assam, 7 July 2010

The ACHR sought urgent intervention of the NHRC for providing humanitarian assistance to about IDPs who have been displaced to escape ethnic violence in Haflong area in North Cachar Hills district of Assam. The NHRC in its order (NHRC Case No. 3/3/13/09-10) on 7 July 2010 informed ACHR that a total of 21,308 Dimasas and Nagas were displaced and given shelter in 45 relief camps. Apart from various assistanc, the State Government of Assam provided ex-gratia grant @ Rs.3 (three) lakhs each to all the families of 73 victims who died in the violence and Rs 10,000 per families whose house were burnt down.

Repatriation of the Bru IDPs to Mizoram started, 21 May 2010

The first phase of repatriation of the Brus displaced from Mizoram in November 2009 took place between 21 May to 26 May 2010. A total of 231 displaced Bru families consisting of 1,115 persons returned to Mizoram. The repatriation took place based on the written assurance provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs,

Government of India with regard to the demands of the Bru Coordination Committee through Asian Centre for Human Rights. The ACHR's Director has been acting as an interlocutor between the BCC and the MHA to resolve the Bru displacement.
